Ectropion and Entropion
Ectropion is an eyelid condition that typically affects the lower eyelid and is described as a pulling away of the eyelid from the eye in a downward or outward direction. This condition can have a number of causes that include previous surgery or injury all the way to normal aging. Besides being less than ideal from an appearance standpoint, the condition can effect the eye causing irritation, watery eyes, and if left untreated, may cause some vision loss.
Entropion is also typically a lower eyelid condition and is the opposite of Ectropion where the eyelid and lashes turn inward toward the eye and can cause great irritation when the lash hairs rub on the sensitive surface of the eye. In severe forms, this condition can have permanently deleterious effects on vision as well.
Dr. Sarcia performs the repair of these conditions in an outpatient setting. The amount of time it takes will depend on the cause of the condition but can be as short as 45 minutes. Local anesthetic and a brief period of general anesthetic is administered by our Anesthesia team. After the procedure, we ask patients to take about a week off of heavy activity and to expect about 2-4 weeks of gradually resolving bruising and swelling. Sun protection with a good pair of sunglasses is strongly encouraged to help with the healing process.
Insurance does cover this surgery in most settings. The patient must be evaluated by Dr. Sarcia. If the patient's condition satisfies their insurance's requirements, and they are deemed a good surgical candidate, the procedure may be scheduled.
